Project Management

When a calamity strikes it usually defines chaos, disorder and disruption. When there is work to be done in disaster stricken areas there is a lot that needs to be organised. So how can one bring order and carry out well organised project execution in such circumstances?

There is an increased need to evaluate processes, available resources and thoroughly plan the next steps to begin delivering value to the beneficiaries and fast! Often the staff involved in these projects are new to the development sector while also being new to project management. PMDPro – Project Management for Development professionals is a certification offered by APMG International in partnership with PM4NGOs, an international NGO that promotes and sustains the professionalism of program and project management in the international development sector.

With over 17,000 certified professionals across 151 countries and 611 organisations PMDPro is helping project managers in the development sector globally. There is a self-study pathway to allow candidates get trained at a pace that suits them best. There are two levels for the PMD Pro exam, level 1 and level 2 that covers all that a professional needs to manage and executes projects in the development sector.

The handbooks, tools and technical documents that the certification provides help in Integrating the process of planning, designing, evaluation as well as implementation of the project and finally closing the project. Equipping project managers with necessary information goes a long way in facilitating the increase in funding towards the very cause. The FREE PMDPro Guide helps in providing tools to aid workers. This helps both the aid-workers as well as the beneficiaries especially in the development sector where wastage of any kind – resources, time and money can be critical.

There is an e-mentoring facility for those who are keen to become mentors, and includes details about how to choose a mentor or become one and how the relationship works. Considering there is little guidance on project management that is specific to this sector especially because it is unique and although there are quite a few project management methodologies available they don’t often apply well to the projects within this sector. Additionally, there is a need for appropriate recognition of competence and provide a mechanism for organisations to recruit and reorganise the skills of the staff.

PMDPro offers a contextualised and standardised body of knowledge, lexicon and tool kit that enables organisations in the sector to work more effectively separately and in collaboration and plus it is affordable. Hence, when it comes to functioning in the midst of disruption and yet drive value, PMDPro could go a long way in benefitting both the parties involved and attaining order by allocating all available resources in line with the circumstances available.
