Events are provided by a team of accredited trainers all with significant track records of experience in the NHS capital investment business case process, aimed at delivering the core syllabus content set in an NHS context.

Training is via an online platform designed to support effective learning outcomes, be accessible to participants and flexible to accommodate individual learning requirements. This has received excellent feedback from delegates, who have consistently reported positive learning outcomes.

We provide the syllabus and added NHS specific context via 'NHS Better Business Cases™ Foundation and Practitioner Masterclasses', allowing time to cover core content and to relate theory to the practical experience of candidates working in the NHS environment.  The training is aimed at anyone involved with or overseeing a project or programme to understand the work that is necessary to prove a case for investment within the public sector, and in particular:

  • Senior Response Owners (SROs), Programme Directors and other Directors with responsibility for the successful delivery of programmes or projects;
  • Project Managers, Project Team members and specialist advisors tasked with delivering a business case for investment, including those related to buildings, equipment and digital technology;
  • Officers involved in the scrutiny and review of investment proposals.

Foundation Qualification:

The purpose is to confirm that a candidate has sufficient knowledge and understanding of the guidance to be able to work effectively with, or as a member of a team to develop a business case using the Five Case Model. The Foundation qualification is also a pre-requisite for the Practitioner qualification.

Candidates should understand:

  • The philosophy and underlying rationale of the Five Case Model;
  • The different types of business case, their purpose, who is responsible for them and when they are required in the development of a spending proposal;
  • The development of the business case in relation to other recognised and recommended best practice for programme and project management.

Practitioner Qualification:

The purpose is to confirm whether the candidate has achieved sufficient understand of the theory and application of the Five Case Model to allow them to effectively develop and produce a business case. A successful Practitioner candidate should be able to start applying the model to a real project.

Candidates should be able to apply and understand how to tailor the Five Case Model effectively to the development of a business case within an organisational environment supporting the approach. Specifically, candidates should:

  • Understand the development lifecycle of the business case and the relationships between the five cases;
  • Be able to apply the steps in the business case development framework, in order to support the production of a business case, using the Five Case Model, for a given scenario.
