Museum Sustainability: Needs and Opportunities (in-person conference in Milan, Italy)

Driving Cultural Change for a Sustainable Future

Museums are more than custodians of collections; they are powerful transmitters of knowledge, experiences, and values that shape our understanding of humanity’s scientific, social, and cultural evolution. Today, these institutions are called to take a leading role in the global transition toward a more equitable and sustainable future.

The international conference “Museums in Sustainability” will explore how museums can integrate sustainability into their operations and culture. While the transition has been underway for over a decade, many institutions still face challenges in embedding sustainable practices into day-to-day management. This event aims to address those challenges and highlight opportunities for change.

Culture at the Heart of Sustainability

Since 2015, sustainability has become an urgent priority, driven by issues such as global warming, resource scarcity, and pollution. Organisations such as UNESCO, ICOM, and the European Union emphasise the strategic role of culture in achieving the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Museums have a unique responsibility and opportunity to contribute to this vision.

A Day of Insight, Innovation, and Impact

This full-day conference will feature four thematic sessions designed to foster dialogue and share innovative practices:

  • Leadership for Change
  • The Benefits of Change
  • Future Scenarios
  • A New Paradigm for the Public

Participants will engage with professionals, scholars, and cultural managers to explore practical strategies for sustainable transformation.

Global Success Stories in Sustainable Museums

Adele De Vito (D.Lab Training & Consulting) will present research on three leading museums:

  • Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) – London
  • Rijksmuseum – Amsterdam
  • Metropolitan Museum of Art – New York

These case studies demonstrate how effective change management can transform museums into dynamic spaces that serve diverse stakeholders while advancing sustainability goals.
