Earlier this week – six industry leaders in IT Training and Certification announced the formation of The Lean IT Association (LITA)

Earlier this week – six industry leaders in IT Training and Certification announced the formation of The Lean IT Association (LITA) along with its newly developed Lean IT Certification Scheme. The consortium’s manifesto explains that it was founded to establish a global standard for Lean IT education and certification – providing a valuable reference for Lean practitioners.

Lean IT is a professional qualification which focusses on applying the Lean Principles to an IT environment - so that an organization can optimize the value of its Information Technology products and services.

Lean Principles were created to help organizations become more efficient and effective in responding to external demands – providing guidance in achieving operational excellence through improved agility, service quality and agility.

The Lean IT Association was formed by three Examination Institutes (EIs), APMG, EXIN, PEOPLECERT and three Accredited Training Organizations (ATOs) – Itpreneurs, Pink Elephant and Quint.  A senior director from each organization constitutes the leading board – Nick Houlton (APMG), Bern Taselaar (EXIN), Byron Nicolaides (PEOPLECERT), David Ratcliffe (Pink Elephant), Maurice Boon (Quint) and Sukhbir Jasuja (ITpreneurs).

ATO Quint Wellington Redwood introduced the idea of a global Lean IT initiative. Quint CEP Maurice Boon said, “Last year Quint reached out to some partners and competitors to start this global initiative on Lean IT. Instead of protecting the IP of each individual organization, we agreed to join forces and to build one global platform for sharing and building the best practice on Lean IT.’

The existing Lean IT certification is already included in APMG’s portfolio of professional certifications, which brought the organization’s attention to potential benefits of a universally accepted Lean IT framework.

Addressing the motive behind developing a universal Lean programme - Nick Houlton, Chief Operating Officer at APMG said, “The IT industry has embraced these principles using the term Lean IT, but while there have been some fragmented initiatives for education and certification in Lean IT, there is no universally accepted programme or thought leadership. The Lean IT Association is aiming to remedy that.”

The certification itself, The Lean IT Certification Scheme – comprises four distinct certifications suitable for people possessing varying knowledge and skillsets. Lean IT Foundation constitutes the entry level certification – followed by Lean IT Kaizen Lead, Lean IT Leader, and Lean IT Coach.

Candidates will experience a greater challenge and breadth of knowledge as they progress through the levels, until they are equipped with the competencies needed for a professional to support corporate introduction or development of Lean IT initiatives.

Training providers interested in delivering the certifications can apply to be accredited through one of the Exam Institutes associated with LITA. The EI will assess the quality of the training organization’s programme, course materials and trainers used in delivering The Lean IT Certification Scheme.
