The International committee for ISO/IEC 20000 meets twice per year in May and November. Here are the latest updates to the standard.

The recent meeting in Lisbon took some key decisions about ISO/IEC 20000 as listed below.

Part 1: Service management system requirements

  • We are now at the final stages prior to publication. The publication date has come forward and is likely to be July or August (to be confirmed) – see separate blog on this topic.
The Final draft international standard (FDIS) is available to buy from the BSI Shop on-line – see separate blog about this.

Part 2: Guidance on the application of service management systems

  • The revision of part 2 continues and will now move to DIS (Draft international standard) stage. It is likely to be published in mid-2019.

Part 3: Guidance on scope definition and applicability of ISO/IEC 20000-1

  • The revision of part 3 continues and will now move to DIS (Draft international standard) stage. It is likely to be published in mid-2019.

Part 6: Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of service management systems

  • Published. It works with both the current 2011 edition and the revised edition of ISO/IEC 20000-1. No need to update

Part 10: Concepts and Vocabulary

  • this document will contain all of the terms and definitions for the ISO20000 series. It also contains an explanation of the key concepts of the ISO20000 series, guidance on the purpose of each part and also guidance on related standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 27001
  • this will now progress to publication and is likely to be published in September 2018 (to be confirmed)

Part 11: Guidance on the relationship between ISO/IEC 20000‑1:2011 and service management frameworks: ITIL

  • A revision is on hold due to the update to ITIL announced by Axelos. Until dates are known for this, no work will be done on updating part 11

Part 12: Guidance on the relationship between ISO/IEC 20000‑1:2011 and service management frameworks: CMMI-SVC

  • The revision has started and is likely to be published in 2019

Part 13: Guidance on the relationship between ISO/IEC 20000‑1:2011 and service management frameworks: COBIT

  • explanation of the similarities and differences between ISO/IEC 20000-1:2011 and the COBIT model including a high-level mapping
  • it has been agreed that development of this guidance will now start with publication likely end 2019 or early 2020.

Further discussions

Part 4 – process reference model (PRM): This document has been withdrawn from the 20000 series. A PRM and associated process assessment model using maturity levels for the ISO/IEC 20000-1 processes will be developed in another committee and be part of the 33000 series of standards.

Part 9 – the application of ISO/IEC 20000-1 to cloud services – will be withdrawn when the revised part 1 is published. The use of 20000-1 with various technologies such as cloud services will be addressed in a new ISO Guide (see below).

Part 5 - Exemplar implementation plan - A task group has been set up to look at what support is required for this topic. It will start with a survey of user needs – do look out for the survey in the coming months. The group will consider if part 5 is required to be updated or if other types of support may be more appropriate e.g. white papers, templates.

Part 7 - Guidance on the integration and correlation of ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO/IEC 27001:2013. This is a new part that is planned to be published in mid-2019. It is becoming more and more common to see integrated management systems with the 3 standards. The guidance aims to be practical to support organizations integrating 20000-1 with either 1 or both of 9001 and 27001.

ISO/IEC 90006 – mapping to ISO 9001:2008: This document will be withdrawn since it relates to a version of 9001 which has been withdrawn.

ISO/IEC 27013 – integration of ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 20000-1: The ISO committee that owns the 27000 series (SC27) has agreed to start considering the design of the revision of 27013 but will not start the formal update until mid-2019 meaning that an update is not likely until 2020.

ISO Guide – an official ISO Guide is planned to be published that will act as a short informal introduction to the 20000 series, how it fits with various technologies (cloud, AI, IoT etc), progressive management practices (DevOps, Lean, Agile etc) and methods/frameworks (ITIL, CMMI-SVC, COBIT, VeriSM etc).

There will be a new web site within the ISO/IEC web site which will be used to provide information about the ISO/IEC 20000 series and its related documents. The timescale for this is as yet unknown.

Summary

The ISO20000 series is being revised. Future blogs will give more information about the revision to part 1.  If you are already certified or starting to implement ISO20000 part 1, do not worry, there will be a 2-year transition period following the revision of part 1.
