Artificial Intelligence. We talk a lot about it but what is it really for?

McDonald’s go large with AI

So, let's think of McDonald's who announced the agreement to buy the Artificial Intelligence  (decision logic technology) startup, Dynamic Yield for a value of 300 million dollars. Very soon, using this new tech, the McMenus will be digital and customized according to users' tastes. In the not too distant future, the McDonald's menu will change dynamically whilst you are ordering – suggesting relevant add-ons, so as to meet your tastes. In other words it will become more and more personalized.

McDonald's tested artificial intelligence in several restaurants last year, and according to Wired, Executive Vice President and Global Information Officer Daniel Henry predicts that more than 1,000 locations will use it within the next three months. He says that the system will eventually reach all 14,000 U.S. restaurants and expand into other markets, and McDonald's plans to add artificial intelligence to self-order kiosks and its mobile app and perhaps other parts of its business, such as kitchens.

The use of Artificial Intelligence will allow McDonald's to "improve the role that technology and data will play in our future," said President and CEO Steve Easterbrook, helping to increase "the speed with which we will be able to implement our vision of creating more personalized experiences for our customers”.

And some basil pesto with that please

Artificial Intelligence has proven to be quite adept even as a farmer. Research by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the results of which have been published in the specialist journal Plos One, has shown that using an automatic learning algorithm for growing basil, it is particularly fragrant and tasty. Scholars define the excellent result as the first step of the new "cyber-agriculture". Now experts are aiming to increase the medicinal properties of some plant species and develop effective methods to help crops adapt to climate change.

AI to help with medicinal properties of basil

After the success of the first experiment, the authors of the research are now trying to obtain basil plants rich in useful substances to combat various diseases, including diabetes. In addition, they are evaluating methods to increase the effectiveness of various medicinal herbs, including Madagascar periwinkle, which is the only known source of certain types of anticancer molecules.

Keep up to date with technology – develop your skills

"Technology is a critical element of our rapid growth plan," says Steve Easterbrook. But he also said that If the pace of change outside is moving more quickly than the pace of change inside, you get a bit left behind.” It’s up to us and to our skills to understand and change in this challenging business world.
