The International Project Management Association (IPMA) is a federation of around 70-member associations across the globe which provides qualification standards for individuals working in project, programme and portfolio management.

IPMA training and certification

IPMA qualifications are internationally recognised and designed for project professionals at all levels in their careers. APMG is working in partnership with APM to offer the IPMA qualifications.

APM is the IPMA membership body in the UK, with the IPMA qualifications being offered through APMG.

IPMA qualifications are available as Project, Programme and Portfolio Management for Levels A and B only and as Project Management for Levels C and D only.

LEVEL A
IPMA® Level A: Certified Project Director, Certified Programme Director and Certified Portfolio Director.

These qualifications are designed for experienced project professionals who can demonstrate an ability to manage complex projects, programmes or portfolios at a strategic level.

LEVEL B
IPMA® Level B: Certified Senior Project Manager, Certified Senior Programme Manager and Certified Senior Portfolio Manager.

These qualifications are designed for experienced project professionals who can demonstrate an ability to manage complex projects, programmes or portfolios.

LEVEL C
IPMA® Level C: Certified Project Manager.

The IPMA Level C qualification is designed for relatively experienced project professionals who can demonstrate an ability to manage moderately complex projects.

LEVEL D
IPMA® Level D: Project Management Associate.

The IPMA Level D qualification is designed for people looking to progress in their project management career.

Overview

IPMA® Level A: Certified Project Director, Certified Programme Director and Certified Portfolio Director. These qualifications are designed for experienced project professionals who can demonstrate an ability to manage complex projects, programmes or portfolios at a strategic level.

Who is it for?

Individuals with a minimum of five years’ experience as a project, programme or portfolio manager in a responsible leadership function in very complex projects, of which at least three years were at a strategic level.

All evidence for Level A must have been obtained within the last 12 years.

What is the process?

STAGE ONE:

  • STEP 1: Firstly, you will need to submit a CV for initial certification which includes personal details, career history, qualifications, training, professional memberships and any other relevant professional development.
  • STEP 2: In addition, you must submit an Executive Summary Report of a maximum 15 pages, self-assessment form, complexity indicator evaluation and two referees who are familiar with your work.

STAGE TWO:

STEP 1: You will need to submit a 25-page report which focuses on the projects, programmes and portfolios which have been referred to in your Executive Summary Report. This report focuses on the application of your leadership of others, using the competence elements being assessed in the report.

STEP 2: Once submitted you will partake in a 120-minute extended interview which will cover 12 competence elements. There is an opportunity to evidence the competence elements which may have not been sufficiently covered previously. 

STEP 3: A final evaluation will be undertaken by the assessor to determine if you have demonstrated sufficient knowledge, skills and abilities in a project, programme or portfolio management context and the relevant level of competence. You will receive a feedback report which will indicate whether the required standard has been met or if you are deemed not yet competent. If you are deemed as not yet competent, the feedback will highlight areas of development that can be addressed prior to a potential re-entry.

What is assessed?

You will be assessed on 28 competences for project management via a report and an interview. To pass, you must evidence a minimum of 23 out of 28 competence elements.

For portfolio and programme management, you will be assessed on 29 competences. To pass, you must evidence a minimum of 24 out of 29 competence elements.

Who is it for?

Individuals with a minimum of five years’ experience as a project, programme or portfolio manager of which at least three years were in a responsible leadership function in managing complex projects.

The experience must have been obtained within the last eight years, however the evidence timescale may be extended by four years with justification.

What is the process?

STAGE ONE:

  • STEP 1: Firstly, you will need to submit a CV for initial certification which includes personal details, career history, qualifications, training, professional memberships and any other relevant professional development.
  • STEP 2: In addition, you must submit an Executive Summary Report of a maximum 15 pages, self-assessment form, complexity indicator evaluation and two referees who are familiar with your work.

STAGE TWO:

  • STEP 1: You will need to submit a 25-page report which focuses on the projects, programmes and portfolios which have been referred to in your Executive Summary Report.   • STEP 4: A final evaluation will be undertaken by the assessor to determine if you have demonstrated sufficient knowledge, skills and abilities in a project, programme or portfolio management context and the relevant level of competence. You will receive a feedback report which will indicate whether the required standard has been met or whether you are deemed not yet competent. If you are deemed as not yet competent, the feedback will highlight areas of development that can be addressed prior to a potential re-entry.

For project management you will be assessed on 28 competences via an oral exam, a report and an interview. To pass, you must evidence a minimum of 23 out of 28 competence elements.

For programme and portfolio management you will be assessed on 29 competences via an oral exam, a report and an interview. To pass, you must evidence a minimum of 24 out of 29 competence elements.

IPMA® Level C: Certified Project Manager.

This qualification is designed for relatively experienced project professionals who can demonstrate an ability to manage moderately complex projects.

Who is it for?

Individuals with a minimum of three years’ experience as a project manager within projects of a moderate complexity.

Or

Individuals with a minimum of three years’ experience in a responsible project management role assisting the project manager in complex projects.

All experience must have been acquired within the last six years. The evidence timescale can be extended by four years with justification.

What is the process?

STAGE ONE:

  • Step 1: Firstly, you will need to submit a CV for initial certification which includes personal details, career history, qualifications, training, professional memberships and any other relevant professional development.
  • Step 2: In addition, you must submit an Executive Summary Report of a maximum 15 pages, self-assessment form, complexity indicator evaluation and two referees who are familiar with your work.

If you are deemed as not yet competent, the feedback will highlight areas of development that can be addressed prior to a potential re-entry.

You will be assessed on 28 competences for project management via an exam, a report and an interview. To pass, you must evidence a minimum of 23 out of 28 competences.

The exam will cover seven competence elements, the report will cover 17 and the interview will cover four.

These qualifications are designed for people looking to progress in their project management career.

Who is it for?

This qualification is aimed at individuals looking to broaden their knowledge in project management. No previous experience is required for this level.

What is the process?
  • Stage One: Firstly, you will need to submit your completed application form and self-assessment form.
  • Stage Two: In stage two you will need to complete a one-hour exam answering multiple-choice questions covering 50% of the syllabus through 60 questions and a two-hour examination via 14 short written answers, with 12 having to be answered.

FAQ

What regulations are the IPMA qualifications based on and where can I find further information?

IPMA certifications are based on the global competence standard: ‘International Competence Baseline (ICB)’. This standard is defined by the IPMA and describes the competences that project, programme and portfolio managers should possess. Download the ICB here.

The certification process involves several steps for the assessment of a candidate and is described in detail in the International Certification Regulations (ICR). Download the ICR here.

Are there any time limits regarding the process?

For a candidate to be awarded an IPMA certificate, they must have successfully completed each of the assessment steps within 18 months from the date of acceptance of their application.

Candidates are allowed to retake a specific stage of the qualification only once, before having to start the qualification from the beginning.

Who is an appropriate referee for my reference statement?

For levels A, B and C (and also re-certification), the referees providing the reference statement need to be able verify the applicant’s eligibility in relation to the level and domain of certification for which the candidate is applying for.

Referees may be contacted by APMG to solicit additional evidence.

What does IPMA certification cost?

Accredited providers are free to set their own pricing for IPMA certification, so we recommend checking the current fees on their websites. The accredited providers in the UK are Novare Consulting and Hult Ashridge.

Can I self-study for the IPMA certifications?

You can self-study for this qualification and apply directly to us by completing an application form. Alternatively, training for IPMA certification in the UK is available exclusively via our two accredited partners, Novare Consulting and Hult Ashridge.

Are there any special dispensations?

APMG is committed to promoting a positive attitude towards people with special learning and physical needs. We have a great deal of experience in facilitating individual requirements and tailoring adjustments with the aim of removing any unfair disadvantage that an individual may encounter as a consequence of their medical condition.

A dispensation may be allowed for candidates with a medical or physical condition that prevents them from completing the examination within the normal regulations. All requests must be supported by a medical certificate or other relevant medical documentation from your GP or other medical professional.

What’s involved in retaking assessment stages?

In the event that a candidate is unsuccessful at any of the stages listed below, they are allowed to retake only once before having to restart the qualification from the beginning.

Assessment stages that can be retaken once:

  • Level A - Report and interview
  • Level B - Report, oral examination and interview
  • Level C - Report and examination 
  • Level D - MCQ paper and SWA paper

We recommend you allow a suitable interval for revision before re-sitting the assessment stage.

What is the appeals process?

What is the re-certification process?

Re-certification is due five years after initial certification for all levels and domains. It is the responsibility of the certificate holder to initiate the re-certification process through application up to a maximum of six months from their certificate expiry date. An extension may be provided up to 12 months from the certificate expiry date, with justification.

Before applying for re-certification, you may wish to consider whether a higher level of certification is now better suited to your career development and experience. In that case, you should apply in accordance with the regulations for the relevant certificate.

All levels require a minimum of 35 hours’ evidence of CPD per annum (175 hours total) since the last (re-)certification.

Applications for re-certification will be considered by a suitably qualified assessor at the relevant level. The assessor may decide to recommend:

  • re-certification without the provision of any further information,
  • that you be called to interview with two assessors,
  • rejection of your application (if the evidence you supply is insufficient or inappropriate).

You are required to submit to the following documents as part of the re-certification application: application form, CV, full self-assessment, CPD log demonstrating you have completed 35 hours of CPD per annum and two referee statements.

You will need to submit your re-certification application and supporting documents to APMG. We will contact you in advance of your certification expiry date with further details. Your application will be processed and the team will contact you with regards to payment of the appropriate fees.

How was the syllabus produced?

To support candidates in understanding how they will achieve competency elements and key competency indicators found in IPMA’s International Competence Baseline document, the standards have been translated into syllabuses which better reflect UK qualifications. As part of this translation, competency elements were grouped together to form learning outcomes with key competency indicators being grouped to form assessment criteria. Candidates will provide assessment evidence through the various assessment methods. Due to the translation from standards to qualifications, competency elements and key competency indicators will be met providing candidates provide sufficient evidence of learning outcomes and assessment criteria in the syllabus.
