The ISO 20000-1 revision is likely to be published much sooner than expected - in July or August 2018.

ISO/IEC 20000-1 revision schedule

The revision of ISO/IEC 20000-1 was expected to publish late October/early November. However, ISO are working faster than anticipated and the revision is likely to publish in July or August 2018.

The final draft internal standard (FDIS) has been released and is now with national bodies for an 8-week ballot which will complete at the end of June.

You can now get an advanced access copy from BSI. Go to the BSI Store to purchase the FDIS and get the published edition free when it is available. There should only be editorial changes to the final edition.

If you look at the foreword, you will see a list of the key changes from the 2011 edition.

There is likely to be a 2-year transition period (to be confirmed but it will not be less than 2 years).

Training for the transition

Many training organizations are already working to produce transition courses and to update their normal courses for the revised edition.

Considerations for the future

Some items that need consideration for the revised edition are:

  • What are the intended outcomes of your service management system (SMS) and your services?
  • What constitutes value for the organization and the customers from the SMS and the services?
  • Who has the authority to make key decision on the SMS and the services?
  • How are the SMS requirements integrated into the organization’s business processes?
  • What knowledge is necessary to support the operation of the SMS and the services?

Summary

If you are already certified or starting to implement ISO20000 part 1, do not worry. It is likely that there will be a minimum 2-year transition period following the revision of part 1. Nothing you are doing now for the current ISO/IEC 20000-1 will be wasted so keep going and then transition in a managed way.
