The 21st Century has witnessed the dawn of the digital age - cyberspace dominates many aspects of everyday lives and organisations are thriving in cyber marketplaces. Despite this dependency, cyberspace is an unpredictable and sometimes hostile landscape.
Cyberspace has given birth to a new era of criminality - sensitive assets stored in cyberspace are attractive targets for cyber-criminals who often successfully steal or expose valuable data. Business leaders have wide-ranging responsibilities to ensure their businesses are safe from cyber crime.
Cases of high-profile organisations falling prey to cyber-criminals are in the headlines on a daily basis and the consequences for such organisations of being breached are often severe. According to the FSB 2016 Report, 66% of businesses have been a victim of cyber-criminal activity but more worrying is the lack of employees with the necessary skills to ensure a business is secure against cyber attacks.
According to research from Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) and the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA), 46% of organisations claim to have a problematic shortage of cybersecurity skills. Another 26% point to a lack of training for non-technical employees, and 21% say that business and executive management tend to treat cybersecurity as a low priority.
