Scrum Product Owner certification now available via APMG and Agile Business Consortium
Widely recognized as the most used Agile framework in the world, Scrum is a well-established framework for developing, delivering and sustaining complex products through effective team collaboration.
Scrum has been used to manage work on product and solution development since the early 1990s. Originally popular in the IT and software development arena, its use has expanded to support a wide range of industries, departments and applications.
APMG and Agile Business Consortium launched their Scrum Master course and certification in 2019 as an alternative to existing offerings in the marketplace.
But a Scrum Master is far from the only significant role in a Scrum Team. Whilst Scrum Masters are responsible for promoting and supporting Scrum by helping everyone understand Scrum theory, practices, rules and values, Scrum Product Owners also play a pivotal role in driving business value from the effective use of Scrum.
The Product Owner is accountable for maximizing the value of the product resulting from the work of the Scrum Team and for shaping, ordering and communicating the goals and needs that drive and focus that work. The Product Owner is one person (not a committee) and will often be expected to represent the needs of many stakeholders.
In line with the existing Scrum Master certification, the new Product Owner certification is supported by two-day courses delivered by APMG and Agile Business Consortium accredited providers. Courses address the principles and theory underpinning the Scrum framework together with the role and responsibilities of a Scrum Product Owner.

Training and certification are based on the latest (2020) edition of The Scrum Guide. Developed by Scrum creators Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, it defines the key elements of Scrum and the rules that bind them together.
The new course offers a combination of instruction and team-based exercises. Delegates are challenged to think in terms of the Scrum principles to better understand their application when returning to the workplace. Delegates will learn the role of Scrum Product Owner, equipping them with the knowledge to work effectively within Scrum Teams towards effective product and solution development.
When developing the Scrum Master course, APMG and Agile Business Consortium were keen to broaden the appeal of Scrum beyond traditional IT and software development domains. The Product Owner course was developed with this goal in mind too, with components and supporting exercises carefully designed to demonstrate Scrum’s application across the wider business.
Scrum Product Owner training and certification is designed for those working in (or aspiring to) a Product Owner role within a development team applying the framework and principles of Scrum. It may also appeal to Scrum Masters who serve the Product Owner by helping them fulfil their crucial role as a member of the Scrum Team.
